A Deadly Affection is a intelligent, well crafted, and absorbing mystery which exposes long hidden secrets and lies all the while calling upon the richness of New York City at the turn-of-the-century.Okay, so I love historical mysteries. Better yet…I love historical mysteries that transport you to the time that the story is taking place. A Deadly Affection is one of those books. Through brilliant writing, completely relatable characters, and a fair amount of intrigue, this book is one of my favorites of the year. The way that the story unravels will keep you guessing until the very end. I am not easily surprised with an ending, but this one took some turns that I didn’t see coming.I cannot wait to see what mysteries Dr. Genevieve Summerford uncovers next.
A Deadly Affection is a compelling love story wrapped up inside a real crime mystery. It is a terrific page turner - Overholt has created some lively and romantic tension between her romantic leads and in the character of Genevieve Summerford she has written a young Katherine Hepburn style heroine, or if it were a movie today, perhaps a role for Emma Stone.I never knew what Genevieve would decide to do next. The story was always a few steps ahead of me and at every turn was another surprise. All the surrounding characters were expertly drawn and intriguing; especially clever when it came to concealing these character's true nature. The writing was wonderful and the turn of the century vision of New York City was reminiscent of the books of Edith Wharton. It is just a wonderful book; the sort of book to get lost in over a lazy weekend. I highly recommend it.
I liked the history involved in this, even though I don't normally like historic fiction. I got very tired early on as to how the protagonist was being treated as a woman. I just didn't want to keep reading on nearly every page how women, coming into the medical field, were being treated. If you want something to be angry at, read this book.
In some ways it reminds me of the BBC series "Copper" because it is about the chasm of the rich and the poor as New York evolves into the most significant center of teeming, creating, striving, changing hive of human activity in the United States. It's about the growing pains of progress within a society. All is changing: science, medicine, industry, human rights and most poignantly the role of women. Genevieve is riding the pulse of innovation. She is has been one of the few women allowed to pursue a medical degree. Having accomplished this goal she attempts to heal the suffering of those at the bottom of New York's caste system with the emerging science of psychotherapy. She is bogged down by her high place in society, being a woman and her family's tragic secrets. It takes a murder to make her step out of her role as daughter, doctor, student and unmarried woman in 1907 New York. As she unravels the secrets of her patient who is accused of murdering two members of the same family she learns that all secrets are really wounds that need to surface in order to be healed.Fast moving and hard to put down. The author really knows how to create suspense and tension as each mystery within a mystery unfolds.
Despite the plot holes, I enjoyed the book overall and especially the interaction between the main character and Simon. The book was written in first person, focusing on Genevieve's point of view. She is an interesting, if flawed, heroine, and her relationship with her father was frustrating and realistic for the time period (c.1906) as far as I know. The descriptions of New York City were fine, and the author obviously did the research. The mystery was very good, and I wasn't sure of the perpetrator until it was revealed. The ending was exciting, with no cliffhangers, although I understand this is the first of a series.
Overall, very interesting. A young woman doctor starts a group for women who experienced a significant trauma in their past which is affecting their daily lives. She, and therefore we, learn a bit about Huntingdon's Corea. The story moves along at a pleasant pace, asthe heroine pursues several threads to discover a murderer and rekindles her love/lust for her former stable boy. The flaw with the book is that things are a bit predictable and the heroine ruminates a bit over much over the man, her dead baby brother (who, though long dead) need not have existed to move the story along. These things made the story seem a bit like chick lit and the narrator a bit immature. Hence, four rather than five stars for this very readable tale.
One of the best mysteries I have read this year. I loved the early twentieth century New York setting of the book - if you love Edith Wharton's New York, you'll enjoy the atmosphere. The story does not shy away from complexity in the characters and plot and it showcases both the progress and lack thereof that we have made in medical science over the past century. Highly recommend this for lovers of historical fiction.
Liked the idea of the book and the story. Woman doctor in 1900s and the mystery was ok. What was not good, was the poor editing, or lack of, in this book. Are all E books not edited? Too many pages of where she was walking to, or from! Really, every turn on each street? Not necessary. Liked the lady doctor. Could have been a much better read.
