I passed today my exam with the first try and this book being the sole source of training material. Given that there is a stunningly low amount of training material available for this excellent cert, this is the book you want to use to get ready.Having long time experience in the IT Security field was the other part i needed to pass the test.Overall:The Book is an easy read and addresses all the topics you need to know for the Exam. Overall one of the easiest reads for a technical oriented exam. I would have given it 5 stars if there wouldn't be the minor negatives below.Negatives:The Book appears to be a little rushed. There are several typos as well as the the Review questions have some mistakes,(calling the correct answer B, but giving the explanation for answer C ) as example. Overall this is minor as these errors are very obvious.The Book doesn't address the performances based questions of the CASP exam. If you don't have experience with security implementations and hands on deployments you will have a rough time during this part of the exam.
My Sec+ was expiring in April and I could've just renewed that for my job. However, I took a pre-test somewhere and thought I'd do well enough on the CASP test since it is much more desirable. I got this book and another aid to study. I tested yesterday and throughout the entire test I was swearing at these "prep" materials. There were so many questions far deeper than anything I read that I kept thinking (during the test) if I wanted to retest CASP again after failing or just recert the Sec+ test. Well, SOMEHOW, I passed the test. I took my time, read the questions DEEPLY, eliminated answers one by one. 77 questions of which 10 are scenarios. And not easy. 155min out of 165min taken, long test. None of this was what I expected. I'm not specialized in security, I'm a Network Engineer with a Sec+ and CCNA cert requirement. I wanted to make myself a little more valuable. No thanks to this book. Yes, I learned a lot from it, but people buying this want the materials to help them learn AND pass that bloody test. I felt so defeated muddling my way through these test questions VERY unprepared. I don't know what else to recommend, this is a hard test that covers a mountain of information. Good luck to everyone pursuing this cert. I still think it's easier than the CISSP and the Gov recognizes it.
Great book, puts you in a fast track and does not lose time on things you were suppose to know at this level.However, cryptography points scattered on the book could use extra work, as the first chapter does. Cryptography seems to be to weakest part of the book, strangely with a dedicated first chapter. I would recommend skipping the first chapter if you have a cryptography background, but it is a good start if the concepts seems unfamiliar, it is presented in a professional language, maybe an academic book would be a nice complement to this reading.Overall, it is a massive source of knowledge, nicely organized for learning and reviewing (I will keep this book around).
Got this for my wife who is not a security engineer but was required to get a mid level IT security certification. Upon first reading I was aghast at how difficult it was to get a grasp of the material from just reading this book - and I have an MS in CS from a top tier grad school. After speaking with others in the IT field, I discovered that the certification is intended for people that already have some experience working as professional IT security engineers. This book seems intended for such experienced people. After my wife took (and passed) the exam, and after looking at materials she was provided by a training class in advance of the exam, I realized that this book actually covered more of the concepts and definitions included on the exam than any other reference material we used. In fact, there was nothing on the exam that was not covered in this book. Even the language and writing style seemed consistent with that used on the actual exam.
Took the test today with a total of 77 questions, 10 being the practical exercise and failed with no indication of score.The book addresses everything I encountered during the exam. The problem I ran into was not being prepared for any of the practical exercises. Not the books fault; however, you cannot rely on this book and additional material alone to pass this exam. Additional network, firewall, and "Nix" experience will be needed.
